Public Defenders and Protests: What are the Issues for PD Leaders and Staff?
Webinar Faculty: Mary Moriarty, Kevin Tully & Paul Dewolfe
February 13, 2017 at 3:00 eastern
About the Webinar: The deaths of black men and women at the hands of the police have led people to rise up and protest all over the country. Given the direction of the new administration, protests are likely to continue. Many in public defense philosophically agree with the issues that are being raised and they want their voices to be heard. But, what about the public defender as protester? What do these protests mean for our offices? As public defenders and public defender leaders, can we be prepared when protests come to our city? In this webinar, three public defender leaders will share insight into what they wish they would have known before protests arrived in their cities. The implications of the public defender as protester will also be discussed. If we represent individuals, not causes, what does it mean when we join the protest?
About the Faculty: Mary Moriarty is the Chief Public Defender for Hennepin County in Minneapolis, MN. Kevin Tully is the Public Defender for Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, NC. Paul DeWolfe is the State Public Defender for the Maryland Office of Public Defense.
