Fundamentals of Effective Direct Examination

June 28, 2018, 12:00 p.m. Eastern, 60 minutes

Webinar Faculty:  Carlotta Lepingwell, Litigation & Hearings Specialist. Office of Capital & Forensic Writs (Texas Public Defender Office)

About the Webinar:  Direct examination is probably the most underrated and under-taught litigation skill. Maybe that's because direct examination contradicts all our of notions of what it means to be a "talented trial lawyer." During direct examination, we are not in the spotlight, the witness is. Good direct examination takes preparation, practice and discipline. And good direct examination of your witnesses, whether they be your client, lay witnesses or expert witnesses, can win your trial. The goal of this webinar is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to prepare and effectively execute direct examination.

About the Faculty:

Carlotta is the Litigation and Hearings Specialist at the Office of Capital and Forensic Writs, where her practice focuses on representing death-row inmates in their post-conviction evidentiary hearings throughout Texas. She has practiced as a supervising attorney and trial attorney at The Bronx Defenders, the Committee for Public Counsel Services and the Orleans Public Defenders. As a supervising attorney, Carlotta supervised both new and experienced trial attorneys. Carlotta was also the sex crimes specialist at The Bronx Defenders, where she was responsible for consulting with and training staff attorneys and investigators handling sex crimes. Prior to becoming a public defender in 2009, Carlotta spent a year in private criminal defense practice in Toronto, Canada. She is a PD for life.
