Measures for Justice: Transparency and Data

September 17, 2018, 1:30 p.m. Eastern, 60 minutes

Webinar Faculty:  Caroline Nobo Sarnoff, Director of Data Outreach, Measures for Justice

About the Webinar:  The webinar will focus on the mission of Measures for Justice (MFJ) and its work with the public defense community.  MFJ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization that collects existing criminal justice data and runs them through a set of comparative county-level performance measures that address three primary objectives: fair process, public safety, and fiscal responsibility.

MFJ’s goal is to increase criminal justice system transparency while providing stakeholders and policy makers with a tool to to make more informed decisions. The county level results from over 350 counties in six states are available on MFJ’s free online Data Portal, here: https://measuresforjustice.org/portal/. The Measures can also be filtered for a deeper look, including: race, gender, age, offense type and severity, and indigent status.

MFJ’s Data Portal allows practitioners and the public to examine the way their local criminal justice system is operating. With support from Google.org, Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Ballmer Group, MacArthur and Arnold Foundations, MFJ is well on its way to measuring 20 states by 2020.

About the Faculty:

Caroline joined Measures for Justice in 2014, and is responsible for the design and implementation of MFJ’s national data collection strategy; including outreach to federal, state, and county-level criminal justice stakeholders. Before joining MFJ, she was a Senior Analyst at Abt Associates, Inc., working with clients such as the Executive Office of the White House, the National Institute of Justice, the NYPD, and the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics. Caroline was formerly the National Site Liaison for the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM II) and the Program Manager for a BJA Second Chance Act grant. She has a Master’s degree in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania.
