Meetup/Investigating Cases Involving Children - Pt.1  12-03-2021- Panel & Q&A  
12-03-2021 12:45 P.M........ Eastern, ~120 minutes

Meet Up/Panel members:  Jonathan Lyon, Prof. Haley Cleary and Joel Wieneke

About the Meet Up:  This session will be a two-part session. The first hour will be in the format of a panel discussion and the second hour will be an question and answer session. Both parts will address various considerations when investigating cases involving children, whether delinquency cases, or criminal cases with child complaining witnesses, or other witnesses. The primary topics covered will be: (1) social media and electronic communications investigation;(Jon Lyon) (2) special considerations when evaluating statements from children, whether that be suspected false confessions, or child hearsay statements; and (3) language considerations when interviewing child witnesses or counseling clients. ?The sessions will be moderated by Joel Wieneke from the Indiana Public Defender Council.

About the Faculty:
JONATHAN LYON is currently the Investigator Resource Coordinator and the national survey investigator for National Association for Public Defense and a legal investigator for McClain Investigations. He is also the president of Lyon Legal Logistics to help attorneys in and out of court with Discovery and technology and has assisted attorneys in multiple federal court jurisdictions.   Jon began his investigative background working in a PI firm and then for 12 years for the Office of the State Appellate Defender of Illinois. His primary focus has been on post-conviction death penalty cases. In addition, Jon worked for LexisNexis as a national trainer of the CaseMap suite of software. He also worked for Lockheed Martin as a contractor supporting government attorneys and investigators with software and electronic discovery support needs. He is a Certified Defense Investigator through DePaul's Center for Justice in Capital Cases and a Certified Trainer through the Bureau of Justice Assistance. He has taught at the Clarence Darrow Death Penalty Defense College, Cardozo, DePaul, Kent, Iowa, and University of Michigan law schools.  He has also taught at the National Defense Investigator Associations Annual Conferences, National Association of Legal Investigators annual conference, National Association for Public Defense, The Innocence Project, NACDL, Federal Defender's winning strategies conferences, Life in the Balance, American Society of Criminology, US Army, and numerous state and county public defender conferences. It is not unheard of for Jon to be invited back to conferences.  Jon is the Creator/Webmaster for the internationally utilized website www.internetsleuth.net.

Prof. Hayley Cleary, MPP, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Public Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Virginia and a Master of Public Policy and PhD in Developmental Psychology from Georgetown University. Cleary's research interests lie at the intersection of social science, law and policy. Her work examines adolescent behavior and decision making in justice system contexts, including youths’ contact with law enforcement, courts and corrections. The cornerstone of her research program involves police interrogation of juvenile suspects. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Cleary’s work has been featured in national media outlets, including the New York Times and New Yorker magazine, and she was named the 2018 Louise Kidder Early Career Award winner for contributions to social issues research by the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. Cleary has been invited on numerous occasions to share her work with academic, law enforcement, and attorney audiences, including the FBI National Academy, the Virginia state legislature, and attorney organizations in several states.

Joel C. Wieneke is a senior staff attorney with the Indiana Public Defender Council, and certified Juvenile Training Immersion Program trainer, and graduate of the National Juvenile Defender Council’s Summer Academy.  He is the 2018 recipient of the Viola Taliaferro Award of the Indiana State Bar Association and the 2019 recipient of the IPDC’s Gault Award.  He is a former law clerk to the Honorable Patricia A. Riley and John G. Baker, both of the Indiana Court of Appeals, former president of the Putnam County Bar Association, and former board member for the Indiana Public Defender Council. Joel lives in Morgan County with his wife and two boys.
