NAPD's Public Defender Bring Your Own “Course” Train the Trainer program for the development of distance learning courses for your organizations.   This course will utilize both synchronous and asynchronous instruction methods. Participants will be expected to read materials and watch short videos on your own in preparation for each class meeting. The class will meet in regular online Zoom video conferences and will also use small group breakout sessions during class where you will work on the course that you are developing. We model best practices for you to incorporate into the course you create.

You will have the option of placing your finished course inside NAPD’s learning management system [LMS].  You will also be able to create a section within NAPD’s LMS for your organization with its own webpage address and design.  After the course you will be able to add additional courses and offer them to your own participants. (Your registration fee for this course includes using NAPD’s LMS for one course and up to 25 active participants in that course. Additional courses and active participants will be available for a reasonable cost to be determined to cover NAPD’s costs with the LMS provider (TalentLMS).

You will be part of a cooperative of public defense trainers from across the nation which provides you the opportunity to copy and modify portions of other courses for your use.

About the Faculty: This course is designed and led by Jeff Sherr, Training Director for the National Association for Public Defense. Jeff has been a public defense trainer for over 20 years and is experienced in designing and implementing public defense training through online approaches. In his current position with NAPD, Jeff has produced hundreds of webinars for public defense professionals across the nation. Prior to working with NAPD, Jeff was the Manager of the Education and Strategic Planning Branch of the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. Jeff started with the DPA in 1994, starting first as a law clerk, then working with the Juvenile Post Dispositional Unit, then in the trial division with the Stanford Field Office, and then in Frankfort with the education staff. Jeff graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1995.  Jeff has been a faculty member for Gideon's Promise, the National Criminal Defense College, Clarence Darrow Death Penalty College, Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop, Bronx Defender Academy, and other state litigation institutes. In addition to regularly training public defender litigators and trainers, Jeff trains public defender leaders nationally and for many individual defender states and offices. Jeff also has an extensive background in theatre having studied with the National Shakespeare Conservatory and the University of Kansas. Jeff performs regularly with Central Kentucky Improv in  Lexington, Kentucky and at Improv Festivals across the country.

Here is what people in the April 2020 class are saying about this course -

This training changed how I think about teaching.  Thanks to what I am learning through the self-paced modules and real-time Zoom sessions, I am rethinking fundamentals and breaking apart ideas in new ways.  You name the group (defense teams, law students, new lawyers, individual offices, statewide organizations), and this training will help you envision a new approach to presenting material interactively in a way that sticks.  I also appreciated how the training takes every participant at own skill level and builds at an individual pace.  I'm learning tech skills I've always wanted to learn that seemed out of reach, and I'm learning a lot from each person in our small group, too.  This training would be great anytime, and in the era of COVID-19, it is exactly what I needed at exactly the right time. - Emily Hughes, Iowa Law School Professor

I had little background on the scope of he NAPD Online Course Development Course when I signed up, only that I would be able to have a finished online course by the end. While I have learned how to develop an online course in the learning management system, I have also learned about engaging online learners, lighting and video work, educational theory specific to the online setting, and technology aids to pull it all together. The time commitment is what you choose, and Jeff’s tutorial videos and instructions alleviate any stress or apprehension. Jeff makes this process approachable and I look forward to the class and small groups each week. I am so glad I took this course and cannot wait to build my next class! -
Stephanne Thornton, Criminal Justice Specialist, West Virginia Public Defender Services

I really enjoyed this course. I liked that it was spread out over four weeks and included a variety of components including watching short videos, completion of specific assignments and real-time discussions with other participants. Lead instructor Jeff Sherr is masterful at not only modeling what quality on-line training should look like but at creating content that is attainable and enjoyable. - Gina Pruski, Training Director, WI State Public Defender

NAPD's Train The trainer has taught me to design exceptional trainings for this period of social distancing. I am sure that I will use these skills for many years, long after we return to in-person conferences. I am thinking more creatively about how we can combine distance learning and in-person training in a way that takes full advantage of the strengths of both. - Betsy Wilson, Supervising Mitigation Specialist, Sentencing Advocacy Group of Evanston (SAGE)

As a hands-on learner myself, this course was a wonderful way to dive into developing an online program!  It was especially helpful to be in small group with colleagues who are working, struggling and succeeding through the same challenges.”   - Alison Bloomquist,  Training Director, Connecticut

NAPD TTT has been a great learning experience for me in so many ways. A lesson I've learned in this process is that I need to invest in myself as a trainer. This course has helped me  grow and improve. It's pushed me outside my comfort zone. I've learned so many technical skills, such as videotaping, powerpoint features, different learning tools, like discussion boards, quizzes and chunking material in a way that make the concepts more compelling. The best part has been learning from some great trainers, both those on the faculty and in the small groups.

The silver lining in this distance learning is that I'm finding opportunities to improve all of MSPD's training, both live and remote.  Distance learning will fill a gap in our training. We can reach people all across the state in a timely fashion.

Thank you NAPD and Jeff Sherr for developing this program. - Melinda Pendergraph, Training Director, Mo State Public Defender
