Meetup Facilitators: Brittany Gail Thomas
About the Facilitators:
Brittany Gail Thomas: Brittany Gail Thomas, Esq. (BGT) brings a wealth of experience to their new role. She is a visionary leader, passionate advocate, and unapologetic champion for marginalized and minoritized communities. She is a wife, mom, friend, mentor, non-profit Founder & CEO, and Assistant Federal Public Defender who combines her passion for equity and true justice with her litigation, training, and administrative skills to manage it all.
“I am thrilled to be joining the team here at NAPD,” said BGT. “Diversity and inclusion are essential components of any successful organization, especially for those of us who serve in the public defender offices. I look forward to working with our members. NAPD Executive Director, Lori James-Townes, echoed BGT's enthusiasm: “We are so pleased to welcome BGT into this important role at our organization. We know that they have the experience and insight needed to help us create an even better environment for all public defenders.”
In her new role, BGT will work closely with NAPD's Racial Justice and DEIJ communities, as they are dedicated to fostering an inclusive community for public defenders across the country both in and outside of the courtroom. They will focus on developing initiatives that promote diversity in all aspects of public defense practice as well as implementing strategies designed to reduce disparities (of all kinds) within public defense systems nationwide.
Additionally, our initiatives, under BGT's leadership, will provide education and training about diversity, inclusion, racial justice, and racial equity issues related to public defense work. This includes identifying areas of need and creating programming to address those concerns, while collaborating with other justice organizations, advocating for change in legislation, and raising public awareness about the importance of DEIJ.
