Best Practices for Post-Conviction

February 20, 2019, 1:00 p.m. Eastern, 60 minutes

Webinar Faculty:  Kim Rigby, Supervising Attorney, Death Penalty Department, Office of the Ohio Public Defender

About the Webinar:  The Webinar will be a general overview of post-conviction practice. Parts of this presentation will be specific to Ohio and the statutory requirements in Ohio.  However, the primary focus will be on post-conviction practice, in general, including the types of claims to raise, the importance of investigation, the kinds of experts to utilize, and what to do if you are granted an evidentiary hearing.

About the Faculty:  Kim graduated from Wittenberg University in 2000 with a major in Biology. She then went on to graduate from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2004, and has been employed by the Death Penalty Department of the Office of the Ohio Public Defender since then.  For almost 15 years, her focus has been capital litigation, and she has handled capital appeals at all stages, including state direct appeal and post-conviction, federal habeas, and clemency. She became a supervisor in the Death Penalty Division in May of 2013, and continues to work at all levels of the state and federal appellate system. She is certified by the Superme Court of Ohio to represent indigent clients in death penalty appeals. Kim has taught as faculty at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund's Annual Capital Punishment Training Conference in Warrenton, VA, as well as at the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' annual death penalty seminar and the Ohio State Bar Association's annual death penalty seminar, both held in Columbus, Ohio.
