Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the Criminal Justice System: A Review for Legal Professionals

December 15, 2017 2:00 p.m. Eastern, 60 minutes

Webinar Faculty: Jerrod Brown, Treatment Director, Pathways Counseling Center

About the Webinar:  Research suggests that TBI is overrepresented in criminal justice and forensic settings and can present unique challenges and significant management problems for mental health, correctional, and legal professionals. These obstacles are often exacerbated when individuals with TBI are not accurately identified and responsively treated. In this 60-minute presentation, attendees can expect to learn about the benefits of routine screening for TBI in criminal justice and forensic settings and to acquire knowledge about the deficits commonly caused by TBI. Specifically, we will focus on how TBI may impact confabulation, competency, diminished capacity, disposition/sentencing, false confessions, sexually inappropriate behaviors, suggestibility, trial right deficits, and the likelihood of victimization during incarceration. Relevant research findings will be presented throughout the webinar.

About the Faculty:   Jerrod Brown, Ph.D., MA, MS, MS, MS, is the Treatment Director for Pathways Counseling Center, Inc. Pathways provides programs and services benefiting individuals impacted by mental illness and addictions. Jerrod is also the founder and CEO of the American Institute for the Advancement of Forensic Studies (AIAFS), and the Editor-in-Chief of Forensic Scholars Today (FST) and the Journal of Special Populations (JSP). Jerrod holds graduate certificates in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Other Health Disabilities (OHD), and Traumatic-Brain Injuries (TBI). Jerrod has completed four separate master's degree programs and is certified as a Youth Firesetter Prevention/Intervention Specialist, Thinking for a Change (T4C) Facilitator, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Trainer, and a Problem Gambling Treatment Provider.
