Assistant Public Defender 1 (Common Pleas) - Trumbull
The Office of the Ohio Public Defender seeks an Assistant Public Defender 1 (APD1) to serve in the Trumbull County Office of our Trial Services Division. The Trumbull County Office provides criminal defense representation to clients who cannot otherwise afford an attorney in the courts in Trumbull County. This APD position will primarily represent indigent trial-level clients facing felony criminal charges in the Common Pleas court, and may also assist on work in juvenile or misdemeanor cases. Note: the position does not
involve trial-level representation in federal court and does not involve post-trial representation on direct appeal, state post-conviction, or federal habeas litigation.
The successful APD1 candidate will thrive in a close-knit team environment and be interested in trial-level work and providing client service in a fast-paced work environment. This position will work with the Common Pleas Legal Team to develop the ability to carry a full case load and be able to perform under progressively less supervision. A successful candidate will also be eager to work with a supervisor to learn the intricacies of the position and succeed in providing high-quality representation.
Essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Prepare both felony and misdemeanor cases for trial
- Try cases as lead counsel or co-counsel
- Conduct pre-trial conferences, hearings, and plea negotiations
- Examine witnesses
- Present legal arguments and evidence
The qualified applicant will have demonstrated knowledge of:
- Substantive and procedural criminal law
- The rules of evidence
- Constitutional law applicable to criminal litigation
- Issues pertaining to trying a criminal case before a jury
Litigation experience is preferred but not required.
