Assistant Public Defender I: District XI (Frederick County)

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks a dynamic, dedicated, and client-centered litigator to serve as an Assistant Public Defender handling misdemeanor matters in District and Circuit Courts in Frederick County, Maryland. Assistant Public Defenders combine their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with their strong litigation skills to provide exceptional representation. The attorney in this position is expected to work independently in managing an active misdemeanor caseload, in both District and Circuit Court, while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. This position will be primarily located in Frederick, Maryland. The attorney in this role is expected to provide support to the Hagerstown office as needed. The projected start date is summer or fall 2021 depending on the candidate’s availability.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Passionate and zealous representation of clients charged with criminal and traffic matters at every stage of the criminal process including but not limited to: bail review proceedings, bench trials in District Court, appeals of misdemeanor matters to Circuit Court, jury demands to Circuit Court, violation of probation hearings, and modification of sentence hearings.

  • Ability to competently and resourcefully prepare for and manage an active caseload.

  • Effectively and compassionately communicate with clients, colleagues, and service providers to ensure optimal outcomes for clients. 

  • Continuously seek professional and personal development through trainings, continuing legal education, and trial skills courses.

  • Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.

  • Exceptional organizational, legal, and administrative skills necessary to handle a high caseload.

  • Some criminal trial experience or exposure is preferred.
  • ?Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state. Attorneys barred in another state must become members of the Maryland Bar within 18 months of start date.
