MAACS Deputy Administrator
JOB SUMMARY:  The Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System (MAACS), a division of the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO), seeks a full-time Deputy Administrator to work in Lansing or Detroit, Michigan. The starting pay for this leadership position is $110,000.  Successful leaders may earn up to $136,000 through annual pay increases.     
ABOUT US:  SADO is a state public appellate defense agency with about 60 staff members and offices in Detroit and Lansing.  MAACS, a division within SADO, administers the appointment of felony appellate counsel in Michigan trial courts, from a roster of approximately 150 private attorneys and SADO.  MAACS and SADO merged for management purposes in 2014.  The consolidated MAACS/SADO agency is overseen by the Appellate Defender Commission under MCL 780.711 et seq.  Additional information about MAACS is available at www.sado.org/maacs and http://www.sado.org/Page/16/Appellate-Defender-Commission-Annual-Reports.
job duties Include:
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of appropriate training to MAACS roster attorneys
  • Providing case-related advice to roster attorneys
  • Monitoring compliance by roster attorneys with MAACS regulations and minimum performance standards
  • Investigating and resolving inquiries and complaints regarding roster attorneys
  • Conducting thorough retention reviews of roster attorney performance
  • Assisting the MAACS Administrator in other responsibilities as assigned

Requirements REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  The Deputy Administrator is a licensed attorney with at least three years of experience handling criminal appeals or public defense assignments.  Advanced technical skills and writing abilities are essential.  While SADO employees are working from their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, this position is available in either our Lansing or Detroit office.
