Sacramento County Chief Public Defender
Sacramento County is currently accepting resumes for the County’s Public Defender position. The ideal candidate is a dynamic individual with an extensive background managing or working in a Public Defender’s Office. Ideal candidates are hands-on, strategic managers who have proven leadership ability to effectively manage a team of seasoned, accomplished professionals towards established goals.

Requirements Ideal Candidates will demonstrate high-level experience as well as an ability to:
  • Effectively manage a variety of Public Defender’s Office programs
  • Foster effective professional relationship with stakeholders, including District Attorney’s Office staff, county leaders, the courts, and community partners
  • Lead and direct attorneys representing socially sensitive cases, including murder trials and cases involving violence, sexual assault, and child abuse
  • Effectively unify and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop and mentor teams of established professionals, including accomplished criminal attorneys
  • Lead strategic planning, staff development, and organizational effectiveness initiatives
  • Establish and govern a service focused work culture, while cultivating an environment of mutual respect
  • Direct, engage, and motivate staff through transformative program initiatives
Additionally, the ideal candidate will:
  • Possess an active membership with the California State Bar
  • Exemplify personal integrity and dedication to public service Have exceptional interpersonal and communication stills
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge and understanding of the laws and challenges facing criminal defendants
  • Be a hands-on, self-driven and results-oriented strategic leader
  • Be personable and approachable and enthusiastically motivate staff, stakeholders, and partners
  • Demonstrate passion and commitment to positively improving departmental programs and services
  • Work well with elected officials, officials from all levels of government, external partners and advocacy groups, the general public, and the media
  • Possess a Juris Doctorate and have seven or more years of management, administrative, and legal services experience working for a Public Defender’s Office
