Assistant Public Defender
The Far West Texas Regional Public Defender is seeking an entry-level Assistant Public Defender, to represent those too poor to hire legal counsel in Brewster, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Hudspeth and Presidio Counties, Texas. The office is in Alpine, the gateway to Big Bend Country. Applicants must be willing to relocate to reside within the region. Compensation includes salary of $67,500 per year, plus benefits including health insurance. The anticipated start date is February 1, 2022.
This position provides a full range of legal services to indigent defendants in the assigned courts. Primary responsibility to handle the misdemeanor case load, some felonies, and most bond issues. Additional responsibilities will be assisting in felony trial preparation and trials and consulting with felony complainants and witnesses. May include some appellate work. The office works in a team-based approach, which provides for this person intensive mentoring and significant experience with the full range of cases handled by the office.
