Training Specialist/ Lead Assistant Public Defender
The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is accepting applications for a Training Specialist in Salina, Kansas. This position is equivalent to a Lead Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender III) with a salary range of $65,000-80,000 commensurate with experience.
 
We are seeking a passionate, dynamic attorney with at least 5 years of experience and a background in litigation and peer development. The best candidate will help transform the Salina Regional Public Defender Office into a model of holistic public defense practice through a combination of their individual practice, creation of teaching and communication strategies and active application of those strategies to client’s cases. This position presents a tremendous opportunity to become a founding leader in our efforts to remake the system of public defense not just in Salina, Kansas, but in the entire Kansas Public Defense System through our first Training Specialist position. We are particularly interested in candidates that have experience in teaching and community organizing who understand the importance of developing community connections as part of a participatory defense model. Requirements The Training Specialist is responsible for developing new attorney’s skills, managing and assisting other attorneys with their advocacy, zealously advocating on behalf of their own clients and assisting the office leadership team with administrative and personnel objectives.

The Training Specialist will manage a limited caseload of their own while assisting other attorneys with training or direct assistance (such as a trial second-chair.) Training should include mentoring, materials, best-practices for client interaction, negotiation, research and writing techniques, investigation, courtroom presentation, criminal procedure, motion practice, sentencing and utilization of local resources while adding to a positive office culture and up-to-date implications of recent court decisions. 

The Saline Regional Office Training Specialist Public Defender will work closely with the Board of Indigents' Defense Services Training Director to develop their materials, local best practices guidance, and specific training materials and programs.

The Training Specialist is a unique position with singular requirements. The best candidates will have significant experience in trial-level criminal defense practice including the defense of off-grid offenses or their equivalents. This includes excellent written and verbal communications skills during the course of complex cases. Prior leadership experience and a background in professional development are necessary with prior instances of developing training materials or programs a plus. Previous training or experience with holistic defense is highly preferred.

As with all attorney positions within SBIDS, applicants must be graduates of an ABA accredited law school and either be currently licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas or be willing and able to seek admission to the Kansas Bar immediately upon hire.
