Assistant Public Advocate - Appeals and Post-Conviction Relief Specialist
Come to the Last Frontier! Practice law in the most beautiful state in the country.
Practicing law in Alaska is exciting and intellectually rewarding, and there are endless opportunities to make a difference both inside and outside of the courtroom. Attorneys here can quickly gain experience and responsibility at the trial and appellate levels.
The Appeals and Statewide Defense Section of the Office of Public Advocacy is currently hiring an attorney to represent indigent clients in criminal appeals
and some post-conviction relief (state habeas) cases
. This unit also handles criminal trials, CINA cases, juvenile delinquency matters, guardianships, and more, so there are opportunities to diversify your practice according to your interests.
Attorneys of all levels of experience will be considered, but applicants should be able to demonstrate effective legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Our highest priorities are a dedication to high-quality representation of our indigent clients, a desire and ability to work in a close-knit team environment, and a willingness to cross-train in areas outside your specific practice to assist your coworkers when necessary. Applicants must be admitted to the Alaska bar or eligible for bar admission by reciprocity.
This position is based in Anchorage, but there may be opportunities for travel throughout the state. Compensation includes comprehensive benefits: medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement, and a minimum of 5 weeks of paid leave in addition to 11 state holidays. Salary is commensurate with experience, between $68,659.50 and $106,450.50.
