Assistant Public Defender: District XII (Allegany County)
The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks a dynamic, dedicated, and client-centered litigator to serve as an Assistant Public Defender in our District 12 office representing clients in Allegany and Garrett Counties. Assistant Public Defenders combine their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with their strong litigation skills to provide exceptional representation. The attorney in this position is expected to work independently in managing an active caseload, while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. OPD will consider candidates at all experience levels for this position. The attorneys in our District 12 offices are primarily assigned to a specific county with the understanding that all attorneys may be called upon to assist in the other county as staffing is needed. The attorney selected for this position will be primarily assigned to Allegany County. Selected candidate should be prepared to start with OPD early 2022.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Passionate and zealous representation of clients charged with criminal and traffic matters at every stage of the criminal process including but not limited to: bail review proceedings, bench trials in District Court, appeals of misdemeanor matters to Circuit Court, jury trials in Circuit Court, violation of probation hearings, drug court proceedings, and modification of sentence hearings. Attorneys in District 12 may also provide representation to juveniles in delinquency matters as well as to parents in Child In Need of Assistance (CINA) proceedings.
  • Ability to competently and resourcefully prepare for and manage an active caseload.
  • Effectively and compassionately communicate with clients, colleagues, and service providers to ensure optimal outcomes for clients. 
  • Continuously seek professional and personal development through trainings, continuing legal education, and trial skills courses.
  • Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected. 
Core Competencies and Requirements:

  • Exceptional organizational, legal, and administrative skills necessary to handle a high caseload.
  • Some criminal trial experience or exposure is preferred.
  • Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state. OPD will consider recent law school graduates who sat for the July 2021 bar examination. If selected, offers will be extended contingent on membership to the bar in advance of the start date. Preference in the selection process will be given to candidates that are already a member of the bar. Attorneys barred in another state must become a member of the Maryland Bar within 18 months of the start date.
