The Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office is now accepting applications for a full-time Investigator. We are an office of 73 individuals, including attorneys, social workers, investigators, intake staff, and secretaries. We handle every aspect of indigent criminal defense from juvenile delinquency to murder. Our office is committed to seeking and sustaining a culturally diverse staff with expertise and interest in serving our indigent clientele who come to us with diverse needs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities in order to yield better results for our clients and our office.
The Office is seeking a self-motivated individual to assist attorneys with client and witness interviews, discovery gathering, and case preparation to identify legal defenses and formulate trial strategy. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated dedication to indigent defense, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.

Requirements Job Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Meets with the attorney to discuss the facts of the case and requested investigative measures;
  • Assist attorneys in preparation for and presentation at trial;
  • Interview defendants, both incarcerated and non-incarcerated, to determine potential witnesses and theory of the case;
  • Perform background investigations, locate witnesses, conduct interviews, obtain written statements, and write unbiased reports;
  • Take photographs of crime scenes, collect and properly maintain potential evidence
  • Serve subpoenas;
  • Testify as to evidence collected interviews conducted and reports written;
  • Working knowledge of computers, smart phones and other technology as well as social media networks;
  • Comfortable working alone, outside of the office, conducting investigations/interviews in all socio-economic parts of Dayton and the region and communicate with individuals of very diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with outside agencies and individuals;
  • Attend trainings and seminars, both online and in person, to further develop skills;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Public Defender or Deputy Director.
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, or equivalent experience. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and/or experience working in the non-profit or public sector is preferred. An ideal candidate will have 1-2 years’ experience using investigative techniques and procedures. They will also exercise sound judgement and decision-making ability and be capable of handling sensitive information.
A well-qualified candidate will have the ability to develop and maintain skills in time management and organization, as well as work independently, but also be able to contribute to the team-based environment. A successful candidate is subject to a drug screen and fingerprint-based, criminal background check.
