DEPUTY ASSISTANT PUBLIC DEFENDER POST CONVICTION
Applications are being accepted for a Deputy Assistant Public Defender assigned to the Connecticut Innocence Project/Post-conviction Unit. This position is located in Hartford at the Office of the Chief Public Defender.   This position primarily involves challenging the criminal legal proceeding that led to an individual’s conviction through the negotiation and litigation of habeas corpus claims.  This position will also provide the opportunity to work on innocence cases, juvenile parole cases, and other post-conviction matters.PURPOSE OF CLASS:  In the Division of Public Defender Services, this class is accountable for providing competent legal representation to adults and juveniles who cannot afford an attorney and who have been charged with a crime/delinquent act or other conduct or in specialty areas such as post-conviction and appellate.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under close supervision of Supervising Asst Public Defender or higher level attorney.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Defends indigent clients; advises clients of rights and responsibilities; appear with and for defendant at all court hearings; review, evaluate and determine legal motions, pleas  and other legal action on behalf of client; involved with Prosecutors in pleas negotiations and other agreements; represent allegedly mentally ill, drug addicted; juveniles and children as well as other applicants for public defense before and during hearings for commitment; order investigations and subpoenas; requests social work services; study and interpret laws, court decisions and other legal authorities; transport, quickly read, analyze and comprehend numerous files, including those related to complex cases, under tight deadlines and in crowded and noisy environment; interview witnesses; do brief, motions and other legal documents; represent clients at jury or court trials; operate a computer to write and prepare work documents; keeps up to date on developments in law practice and attends training; develops and maintains relationships with outside agencies. Performs other related duties as assigned. Appellate Unit and Innocence Project: Directs the appellate and other appeals efforts of assigned cases; presents cases to the Superior, Appellate and State Supreme Courts; performs extensive legal research; involved in extensive briefing

Qualifications:  Desirable candidates should have experience in criminal defense post-conviction (internships included) and must be currently admitted to the Connecticut Bar or admitted by December 31, 2021.  Anticipated start date is mid-January.
Starting Salary: $72,458-81,506 based on experience   with full State benefits.
