Assistant Public Defender 1 - Juvenile Department
The Office of the Ohio Public Defender seeks an organized and dedicated Assistant Public Defender 1 ("APD1") for the Appeals and Post-Conviction section of its Juvenile Department.
The Juvenile Department is a team of talented professionals focused primarily on post-disposition advocacy and ensuring that the constitutional rights of children are fully realized and protected. We steadily work toward a holistic approach to helping youth in the justice system and know that the value of our advocacy extends beyond a child’s duration of confinement.
Appellate attorneys in the Juvenile Department provide representation in a wide range of proceedings following a child’s delinquency adjudication in juvenile court or conviction in criminal court, post-transfer. Successful APDs in the Juvenile Department demonstrate a commitment to indigent defense and a compassion for children. They also have strong analytical skills and are adept at legal research and persuasive writing. Further, an APD 1 also demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, a desire to expand one’s legal knowledge and skills, the ability to accept constructive feedback, and works well as a member of a team. The position currently offers you the opportunity to work from home for portions of the time, so a successful candidate will be self-motivated and comfortable communicating via Microsoft Teams or other conferencing software.
