Law Student Intern (Paid)
The Legal Department is seeking a temporary-intermittent part-time Law Student Intern to assist our attorneys in providing zealous, empathetic, and committed advocacy before trial courts, appellate courts, and the Ohio Parole Board. The student will work under the supervision of attorneys in our Department and will work collaboratively and be mentored by attorneys, investigators, and support staff on a range of legal and administrative advocacy. In a given day, the student may conduct legal research for a pending appeal from a criminal conviction, review a trial record for the development of postconviction claims, compile documents for inclusion in a memo to the Adult Parole Board, and/or prepare attorneys in our office for advocacy through moots and round tables.
Candidates should have already completed the first year of law school. This temporary position involves various duties that can either supplement the student's major field of study and/or provide experience that is useful in addition to the student's education.
Applicants will be expected to perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
- Conduct legal research on defined or potential issues in cases & present this information orally and through writing
- Draft legal arguments to use in motions, pleadings, and parole board advocacy
- Conduct factual investigations, review, and analysis of pending cases
- Accompany staff attorneys to client visits, oral arguments, trials, and parole preceedings
- Participate in departmental meetings, moots, roundtables, and agency-wide meetings.
The Law Student Intern will enjoy flexible scheduling based around their school schedule and work approximately 10-20 hours a week during the 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM hours, Monday through Friday, not exceeding 30 hours per week. This paid internship will extend through June 2022 with the potential to be renewed July 2022.
