Chief Trial Deputy
Under the general direction of the Public Defender and Assistant Public Defender, the incumbent assists in the overall management of the Department, directly supervises staff, assigns cases, manages workloads, conducts regular staff meetings, may supervise an organizational unit and/or special program, tries the most complicated cases, and performs related duties as required. The Chief Trial Deputy combines demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with strong leadership and litigation skills to ensure the highest standard of client representation in a team-oriented environment, focused on a client-centered approach to representation.
Chief Trial Deputies are expected to undertake major litigation and major administrative duties as assigned. This position will manage and direct the operations of the Santa Barbara County Public Defender's Office. This position serves as a part of the Leadership Team to assist the Public Defender in conducting long-range planning and setting policies and procedures. Incumbents in this role lead other managers and model behaviors that exemplify quality customer service; provide effective and ethical leadership; plan creatively and strategically, develop and implement programs that use human and financial resources to achieve results; are accountable for strategy and goal formation consistent with the County's mission and key business objectives; engage stakeholders; communicate and collaborate effectively at multiple levels; develop employees; analyze issues and data; and efficiently use public resources.

Requirements |
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Active membership in the State Bar of California AND
- Seven years as a general practicing attorney in the field of criminal law, including 10 felony trials to verdict and 5 misdemeanor trials to verdict, and one homicide case; OR,
- One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy Public Defender Senior with Santa Barbara County, including 10 felony trials to verdict and 5 misdemeanor trials to verdict, and one homicide case; OR,
- A combination of training, education, and experience (including number and type of cases) that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge, and abilities.
