6AC - Program Manager for Law Student Network
The Sixth Amendment Center (6AC) is a national non-partisan, non-profit organization
dedicated to ensuring that no person faces potential time in jail or prison without first having the aid of a lawyer with the time, ability and resources to present an effective defense, as required by the United States Constitution. We do so by measuring public defense systems against Sixth Amendment case law and established national standards of justice. When shortcomings are identified, we help states and counties make their courts more fair by implementing the constitutional right to counsel.
Founded in 2013, 6AC is not your typical non-profit organization. Helping ensure equal access
to justice for people of limited means nationwide requires us to operate differently. Our staff is
decentralized, working remotely from locations throughout the country (we have successfully
operated remotely even before the start of the pandemic!) and developed tools to deliver services
out into the field. 6AC is not a membership organization and we do not litigate. Policymakers
and criminal legal system stakeholders look to us for objective and reliable information on how to ensure that the constitutional right to counsel for people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer is being met.
