Team Leader- Discovery and Forensic Support Unit
The New York State Defenders Association (NYSDA) is seeking a Team Leader for our new statewide Discovery and Forensic Support Unit. This Unit, part of our Public Defense Backup Center, will be instrumental in assisting defenders around the state to advance quality representation in criminal and family court cases involving forensic evidence. NYSDA, a not-for-profit, membership organization, has been providing support to New York's public defense community since 1967. NYSDA’s mission is to improve the quality and scope of publicly supported legal representation to low income people. NYSDA operates the state’s Public Defense Backup Center, which provides legal support services, training programs, its Public Defense Case Management System, and other services to public defense offices and assigned counsel attorneys throughout the state. NYSDA offers high quality training to public defense attorneys, investigators, social workers, and other members of the public defense team.
The Discovery and Forensic Support Unit will provide consultations, training, resource guides, updates on forensic developments, and expert witness referrals to criminal and family court defenders and other members of defense team throughout New York State.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Working with the Executive Director and Deputy Director, hire, train, and supervise members of the Discovery and Forensic Support Unit
  • Develop a training curriculum and plan in-person and web training programs for defenders on forensics
  • Develop resource guides and best practices for defenders and defense offices regarding discovery management and forensics
  • Provide regular updates on forensic developments to the public defense community
  • Provide case consultations to defense attorneys in criminal and family court cases
  • Provide expert witness referrals to defense attorneys in criminal and family court cases
  • Coordinate with other Backup Center staff to assist and support defenders
  • Act as a liaison to local, state, and national defender offices and organizations in the areas of discovery management and forensics
  • Stay up to date on various forensic disciplines that impact criminal and family court proceedings
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Deputy Director
NYSDA’s main office is in Albany, NY. Applicants must be able to work in Albany or remotely (from within New York State), with the ability to travel to the Albany office as needed. Travel to training events and meetings around the state is required. The position involves some weekend and evening hours.

Salary: $105,000 + depending on experience. NYSDA offers a generous benefit package, including paid vacation, personal, and sick time; health, dental, and vision insurance; FSA; and 403(b).

Requirements Qualifications and Experience
  • Admitted to practice law in New York
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in criminal defense and/or adult family court representation
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience handling complex criminal and/or family court matters involving forensic evidence
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to public defense, NYSDA’s mission to improve the quality and scope of representation to individuals who cannot afford counsel, and advancing equitable and racial justice
  • Proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and other online software
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Master’s or doctoral degree in one of the foundation sciences, mathematics, or statistics or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with quality assurance standards, accreditation processes, and validation methodologies
  • Experience teaching or training on scientific concepts and developing training curricula
  • Experience with complex research and writing projects
  • Experience working with expert witnesses, consultants, and scientists
  • Strong foundation in forensic DNA analysis casework, including mixture interpretation and applicable software, or other relevant professional experience
  • Experience with cases involving large volumes of discovery (paper and electronic)
  • Supervisory and management experience
