Assistant Public Defender: Anne Arundel County
The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD) seeks dynamic and client-centered litigators to serve as An Assistant Public Defender in District VII serving Anne Arundel County. The attorney in this position is expected to work independently in managing an active caseload while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. This position will be primarily located in Annapolis, Maryland but will involve travel to all District Court locations in Anne Arundel County for court. The anticipated start date is flexible but ideally late fall 2022/early winter 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities
  •  Ability to competently and resourcefully prepare for and manage an active caseload.
  • Effectively and compassionately communicate with clients, colleagues, and service providers to ensure optimal outcomes for clients.
  • Continuously seeks professional and personal development through academic courses, skills trainings, and CLEs.
  • Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.
  • Passionate and zealous representation of clients charged with criminal and traffic matters at every stage of the criminal process.
Core Competencies and Requirements:
  • Criminal trial experience or exposure preferred.
  •  Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, diverse, team-oriented environment.
  • Exceptional organizational, legal, and administrative skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people who have different backgrounds and experiences
  • Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state by start date. OPD will consider candidates who sat for the February 2022 bar examination. If selected, offer will be extended contingent on membership to the bar in advance of the start date. Preference in the selection process will be given to candidates that are already of the bar. Attorneys barred in another state must become a member of the Maryland bar within 18 months of the start date.

  • Assistant Public Defender II-$69,069.00-$90,802.00 (Step 1-Step 11)
  • Assistant Public Defender III- $73,714.00-$96,084.00 (Step 1-Step 11)
