The Ohio Public Defender’s Office is hiring for an Assistant Public Defender for its Trumbull County Office.  You will primarily represent indigent trial-level clients facing felony criminal charges in the Common Pleas court and may also assist on work in juvenile or misdemeanor cases as a member of the Trumbull County Office. The Trumbull County Office is a trial-level office that provides criminal defense representation to clients who cannot otherwise afford an attorney. Note: the position does not involve trial-level representation in federal court and does not involve post-trial representation on direct appeal, state post-conviction, or federal habeas litigation.  
To be successful in the position, you should thrive in a close-knit team environment and be interested in trial-level work and providing client service in a fast-paced work environment. You should also be eager to work with a supervisor to learn the intricacies of the position and succeed in providing high-quality representation. 
The position currently offers you the opportunity to work from home for a portion of time, so a successful candidate will be self-motivated and comfortable communicating via Teams or other conferencing software during those times.
Essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Prepare cases for trial
  • Try cases as lead counsel or as co-counsel
  • Represent clients in community control violations
  • Conduct pre-trial conferences, hearings, and plea negotiations
  • Examine witnesses
  • Present legal arguments and evidence

Admission to Ohio bar pursuant to section 4705.01.
Note: Prior to representing a client in federal court or U.S. Supreme court, attorney shall obtain admission to practice law in that court; prior to appointment as appellate counsel for an indigent defendant in a capital case pursuant to Appt.Coun.R. 5.02 & 5.03, an attorney shall obtain certification from the Commission on Appointment of Counsel in Capital Cases.
Note: Eligibility to practice under a Certificate to Practice Law Pending Admission in Ohio, under Rule I, Section 19 of the Supreme Court Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio, or eligibility to practice under a Temporary Certification for Practice in Legal services, Public Defender, and Law School Programs under Rule IX of the Supreme Court Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio, may be accepted in lieu of admission to the Ohio Bar pursuant to R.C. Section 4705.02.


Knowledge of criminal law, judicial system & process in Ohio, human relations, policies & procedures of Office of the Ohio Public Defender* (e.g., standards promulgated*); legal counseling; interviewing; public relations. Skill in: Word processing (e.g., Microsoft Office), computer software applications (e.g., OPD Online*, Legal Research Software*), keyboarding, equipment operations (e.g., computer, scanner, copier). Ability to deal with many variables & determine specific action; calculate fractions, decimals & percentages; prepare & review pleadings, briefs, motions & memoranda; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; complex legal issues, some without clear legal precedent, involving significant risks & mental strain; ability to maintain attention to detail & professional composure under intense pressure & 3 OF 8 volatile circumstances; establish good rapport with clients & their families &/or work cooperatively with county public defenders & members of private bar; handle contacts with federal, state & local officials or group representatives to resolve problems concerning specific clients or criminal law in general.

The final candidate selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position.
