Senior Trial Attorney - Fredericksburg, Virginia
The Fredericksburg Public Defender has a unique opportunity for an experienced, trial-forward criminal defense attorney to fill the position of Senior Trial Attorney. The Senior Trial Attorney will be expected to handle a significant amount of serious felony and high-profile cases for an office seeing a substantial increase in jury trials. This position will be expected to serve effectively as first chair on more serious jury trials, and as second-chair on juries with less experienced attorneys.

The Senior Trial Attorney reports to the Chief Public Defender and is employed at will.

Duties:
Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. The Senior Trial Attorney will serve as a role model for client-centered representation, a collaborative office culture, and aggressive trial advocacy The Senior Trial Attorney will assist in monitoring ongoing jury trials in the office, and provide training to the office, or specific staff, about trial skills. |

Minimum Qualifications |
Juris Doctor (J.D) and Virginia State Bar admission (or eligibility for admission by waiver), extensive criminal litigation experience, comprehensive knowledge of Virginia Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and the Standards of Practice for Indigent Defense Counsel is required. Must have experience trying multiple juries. The qualified applicant will be well-organized and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Teamwork is highly valued in this office, and the qualified applicant will have demonstrated proficiency in working with others as a member of the criminal defense team to achieve successful outcomes for clients. Applicants must have at least three (3) years of experience as a criminal defense attorney, and significant trial experience, specifically jury trial experience. A valid driver’s license (and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails) is required.

Preferred Qualifications |
Experience supervising other attorneys on jury trials is preferred. Experience training other attorneys or legal professionals in trial skills is preferred.
