Virginia Defenders- Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is excited to announce the opportunity to be on the front lines of what many consider to be the modern-day Civil Rights Movement- criminal justice and justice reform. This is a unique platform to develop and pursue social change and impact the lives of clients. The qualified candidate should be committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The attorney will handle trial and appellate cases. The VIDC is committed to providing quality legal services for indigent defendants charged with criminal offenses. The Deputy Public Defender reports to the Public Defender of the Petersburg Office and is employed at- will. A successful candidate is subject to a fingerprint-based criminal background check.

The Deputy Public Defender is responsible for conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions, and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts, and identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. This position will be responsible for supervising senior staff as well as less experienced attorneys. This position is also responsible for assisting in coordinating the office’s in-house training program, monitoring the office’s appellate practice and assisting the attorneys in writing effective appeals. Minimum Qualifications
Virginia State Bar admission is required along with considerable working knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence. This position requires at least 4 years of experience in criminal law. Prior experience in supervising and training is required. Experience handling criminal appeals and a strong knowledge and understanding of the IDC’s Standards of Practice are also required. Compassion and patience in addressing client-related issues and questions are also needed. Additional qualifications include the ability to learn and accept constructive criticism and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. A valid driver’s license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are also required.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working in a Public Defender office is preferred.
