Civil Attorney, Collateral Consequences Unit
The Civil Attorney will assist New York County Defender Services (NYCDS) clients in navigating the collateral consequences of their criminal legal system involvement. Practice areas include Housing, Civil Forfeiture, Employment, Licensing, Public Benefits and Reform Litigation. The candidate should have expertise in at least one of the above-listed practice areas and a desire to learn new areas of advocacy and litigation.
New Yorkers who come into contact with the criminal legal system are confronted with myriad problems that flow from an arrest, as well as the challenges of navigating life in New York as a person with limited resources. NYCDS seeks someone who is motivated to creatively problem-solve with clients. In addition to working with NYCDS’ exceptional trial attorneys, the Collateral Consequences Unit collaborates with the other excellent teams at NYCDS, including Social Work, Paralegal and Reentry.
