Assistant Federal Defender
Assistant Federal Defenders represent persons who are financially unable to retain counsel and are charged with violating federal law in the Middle District of Georgia.   Representation is in the United States Magistrate Court, District Court, the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Supreme Court.  Individual attorneys have full responsibility for their cases - from initial appearance and bail hearing through to the conclusion of the case.  

This office prides itself on its reputation for zealous representation of those who have no voice.  The practice is client centered and the office strongly believes in the importance of supporting diversity in its hiring and employment practices. 

The Middle District of Georgia includes five divisions, based in Macon, Columbus, Valdosta, Albany and Athens.  The main office is in Macon and a branch office is in Columbus.

Requirements Applicants must have criminal trial experience, knowledge of federal criminal trial practice and excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills; and must possess compassion for accused persons and appreciate the impact that arrest, accusation and detention, as well as conviction and sentencing, have on clients, their families and communities.  Fluency in Spanish is a plus.  

Applicants must be an active member in good standing of the bar of any state and eligible to practice in  United States District Court. This is a full-time position with salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience. Salary is on a scale equivalent to those of Assistant United States Attorneys.  

FDMDGA is a nonprofit corporation, funded by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.  It is not an agency of the federal government and staff members are not federal employees.
