Staff Investigator
The Staff Investigator assists attorneys by investigating, analyzing, developing, and presenting factual and mitigation evidence for use in evidentiary hearings, trial and negotiation.  Investigators develop relationships with clients, family members and witnesses and work in a collaborative manner with other members of the defense team. Duties include field investigation, locating and interviewing lay, expert and professional witnesses; reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case-related materials;  identifying, locating and gathering records; examining tangible evidence; conferring with attorneys to identify legal and factual issues, assisting attorneys in trial, hearings and sentencing preparations; writing reports describing work done, evidence located, discovery critiques and other matters; and occasionally testifying in federal court proceedings.

Requirements To qualify for the position of Staff Investigator, applicants should have a four year college degree, preferably in criminal justice or a related field, three years’ general experience and a minimum of three years of mitigation and criminal fact investigation or comparable experience. The applicant must possess strong analytical abilities with experience in organization, review, analysis and presentation of complex cases or cases with significant discovery. Applicants should understand and be able to develop both innocence/guilt and mitigation evidence and strategies, should have a working knowledge of the criminal justice system and be culturally aware and adept at interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and life experience. 

Criminal defense-related work, federal court experience, and trial preparation experience are very helpful. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Extensive computer experience is required, and proficiency in litigation support, case management, and data management software is strongly preferred. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, a reliable and insured automobile by the date of hiring.  Travel expenses are reimbursed.
