Forensic Social Worker, Re-Entry Team
New York County Defender Services has an opening for a Forensic Social Worker in its Upstate Re-entry Unit to provide services to clients who are sentenced to prison in New York State. The primary role for this social worker is to assist clients in preparing for their parole board hearings and with re-entry support upon release. The social worker will facilitate the parole preparation process by helping clients reflect on the topics to be addressed in the interview, conducting mock interviews, and creating a parole advocacy packet which will include an advocacy letter giving the parole board a clear picture of the client’s biopsychosocial background. The social worker will continue to work with clients upon their re-entry into society. This re-entry support will take the form of assisting with the implementation of clients’ discharge plans and providing referrals to organizations in the community that can meet clients’ re-entry needs and goals.

Requirements |
This position involves travel to New York State correctional facilities.
Essential duties/responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Interviewing clients to gain information regarding biopsychosocial history, history of legal involvement, experiences during incarceration, and re-entry needs
- Preparing parole advocacy packets for clients with parole board hearings, including gathering letters of support, letters of assurance, and other supporting documents
- Collaborating with clients to create a discharge plan that will meet clients’ re-entry needs
- Interfacing with DOCCS and correctional facility staff; building working relationships with organizations in the community providing services
Requirements:
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) degree, or Master Social Worker (MSW) degree with ability to obtain licensure within six months
Driver’s License preferred.
