Investigator - Charlottesville, VA
The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is now accepting applications for the position of Investigator in the Charlottesville Public Defender Office. The Office is seeking a self-motivated individual to perform investigative work for public defense cases. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Investigator reports to the Public Defender of the Charlottesville Office and is employed at-will.
Duties:
This position is responsible for conducting interviews of all relevant witnesses and defendants to gain relevant information aiding in the preparation of cases and will appear in court as needed. Additional duties include gathering documents, taking photographs and measurements, serving subpoenas, and any other necessary steps resulting in a thorough investigation as assigned by the attorney. The position is required to have close interaction and build rapport with members of the public defender team and reports to the attorney handling each case. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as investigations require. The successful candidate will be expected to seamlessly interact in a cooperative manner with indigent populations in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area.

Requirements |
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college/university, prior experience with investigations, or equivalent life experience interacting in a cooperative manner with indigent or at-risk members of the Charlottesville/Albemarle community (this may or may not include some period(s) of incarceration for the candidate as a criminal conviction will not be an automatic disqualifier of the candidate).
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system including court proceedings as well as experience using investigative techniques and procedures to include strategic thinking and judgment.
- Valid driver’s license and transportation.
- Experience using Microsoft Office products and internet research tools (including social media).
- Ability to develop and maintain skills in time management and organization as well as work independently and collaboratively in a team-driven environment.
- The ability to collaborate with community resources, agencies, and local advocates and develop working relationships.
- The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior investigative experience in a public defender office is preferred. Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred. Experience investigating mitigation evidence is preferred. Intimate knowledge of the Charlottesville/Albemarle community is preferred. Prior cooperative interaction with indigent communities is preferred.
