The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) Administrative Office has an opening for an Immigration Resource Attorney. The office is seeking a self-motivated individual to be a resource and support to attorneys (including training and consults) at the Public Defender Offices throughout the state for all immigration practices and legal concerns. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. This position may be filled as either fulltime (40 hours per week) or part-time (30 hours per week). There is some flexibility to the location of this position within the state of Virginia, however, the Richmond VIDC Administration office is preferred. The Immigration Resource Attorney is subject to a fingerprint criminal background check and will be employed at will.

Duties:
This position is responsible for developing a training curriculum for all court appointed attorneys, and for developing immigration reference materials for distribution to attorneys. The Immigration Resource Attorney will be responsible for developing and maintaining the immigration help desk which would include the following duties: answering questions of attorneys appointed to represent non-citizen clients, reviewing proposed plea agreements, and advising attorneys in plea negotiations. The incumbent for this position will also be required to travel to Public Defender Offices to train attorneys and other staff on immigration. The individual in this position will be required to develop relationships with and to provide training to non-Public Defender court appointed attorneys across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Additional duties include updating the resource website as it pertains to immigration materials and participating in regional and national immigration groups.

Requirements

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and Virginia State Bar admission is required for consideration for this position. Knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence is required along with experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications. The qualified candidate must have demonstrated knowledge in Federal Immigration Law. A valid driver’s license and the means to travel to Public Defender offices are required.

A minimum of five years of criminal defense experience as an attorney is preferred.
