Deputy State Appellate Public Defender
Agency Description: The State Appellate Public Defender is a law office which provides appellate and post-conviction representation to indigent defendants pursuant to Idaho Code § 19-868.
Example of Duties

A Deputy State Appellate Public Defender represents indigent defendants on appeal in Idaho's appellate courts.  Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicate effectively with, and competently advise, clients whose cases are pending on appeal;
  • Carefully review trial court records and fully evaluate potential issues for appeal;
  • Conduct thorough legal research;
  • Draft clear, concise appellate briefs;
  • Deliver persuasive oral arguments before the Idaho Court of Appeals and the Idaho Supreme Court; and
  • Engage in motion practice as needed.

Requirements The successful candidate will be a law school graduate and will be licensed to practice law in Idaho (or will be in the process of seeking admission to the Idaho State Bar).  A commitment to indigent defense is critical.  Criminal law, appellate experience and/or an appellate court clerkship is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 
The ability to exercise sound professional judgment is a must, as is the ability to maintain client confidentiality. The successful candidate will also be: detail-oriented; able to manage a heavy caseload and produce a high volume of top-quality work; able to communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds; a skilled writer and proofreader; an excellent researcher, with experience utilizing Westlaw; a persuasive oral advocate; and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.  Experience with ProLaw is preferred.  Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
