The Washington State Office of Public Defense seeks an attorney who is a proven trainer and litigator with experience developing effective equity-based legal arguments to address systemic racial and economic disproportionality in the justice system. This attorney will have an understanding of how race, gender, national origin, disability, and class intersect to create disparities for individuals and families who are accused of crimes or otherwise face state intervention into their lives.
The public defense Disproportionality Legal Training Coordinator is a new full-time position. The successful candidate will work closely with OPD leadership, OPD managing attorneys, and external partners to develop and implement specialized legal training to help public defense attorneys throughout the state identify and successfully argue disproportionality issues in trial and appellate courts.

Requirements Duties Include
  • Collaborate with OPD leadership, managing attorneys, and external partners to develop high-impact innovative legal skills training focused on effectively raising disproportionality issues in Washington’s trial and appellate courts. 
  • Organize and conduct in-person and web-based training for attorneys.
  • Recognize and help develop equity leaders in public defense communities statewide.
  • Provide expert consultation to attorneys seeking technical assistance on specific issues.
 Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association, or ability to become licensed in Washington within one year of employment. 
  • Experience in trial and/or appellate practice in criminal defense, or child dependency/termination of parental rights, or civil rights/social justice issues. 
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise related to diversity, equity and inclusion as well as issues related to historically marginalized and justice-involved communities. 
  • Comfortable engaging with data and people. 
  • Must be able to develop and sustain respectful professional relationships with attorneys, courts, legislators, and others in communities throughout Washington. 
  • Strategic thinker who prioritizes tasks and can function independently and with a team. 
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledgeable about the use of data in litigation to promote social justice and legal system reform. 
  • Experience working with clients living in poverty and/or from diverse cultures.
