Chief Public Defender
Travis County is looking for a leader who can provide vision, leadership and collaboration in establishing Travis County’s first-ever Public Defender Office. The County envisions the Public Defender office to be client-centered, independent, and innovative to the needs of Travis County residents, and to improve the quality of public defense representation countywide.
Appointed by the Travis County Commissioners Court and reporting administratively to the County Executive of Justice Planning, this role will be responsible for implementing the creation of an independent Public Defender Office to provide robust and client-centered representation to adults accused of misdemeanor and felony offenses in Travis County.
The ideal Chief Public Defender will bring experience and vision to build a Public Defender Office with a team-based, collaborative approach responsive to client and community needs. The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in building partnerships with local service providers, community groups, and stakeholders to ensure zealous representation and best outcomes for low- income clients.
The Chief Public Defender will work in conjunction with the Public Defender Organizational Development Committee to develop and maintain a strategic plan for public defense in Travis County and to implement the functions and capabilities of the new Public Defender Office as outlined in the grant application approved by the Commissioners Court and the Texas Indigent Defense Commission.
The creation of the new Travis County Public Defender Office will be funded in part by a four-year state grant administered by the Texas Indigent Defense Commission. Under the terms of the grant, the new Public Defender Office will be responsible for providing representation in approximately 30% of the adult criminal cases filed in Travis County by the end of the grant term. Travis County has committed to the continued funding of the Public Defender Office after the grant period.
