Director of Training
Public Defender Services of Lane County, Inc., is looking for a Director of Training to join our team in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, as we work to strengthen our skills and move towards a smaller caseload with an increased emphasis on holistic representation. The Director of Training is part of the leadership team at Public Defender Services of Lane County, and tasked with providing high quality training to staff and to law students. The ideal candidate is an experienced trial attorney who has a strong knowledge of criminal procedure from arraignments to complex trials; understands how to develop effective training programs; and is a veteran leader of people and teams. To ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services, the Director of Training will provide training in trial skills, forensic evidence, expert witnesses, community resources, and other opportunities to sharpen litigation skills. This position strengthens and expands our existing Director of Education role, which was focused solely on supervising and mentoring law students participating in the University of Oregon School of Law Criminal Defense Clinic.

Our lawyers are fighters, thinkers and doers. They know when to call out bad faith arguments and when to let things go unsaid. But most importantly, they are committed to their clients, and fight to redeem those that society says are unredeemable. Full time trial attorneys are generally responsible for a caseload of 15 to 25 new cases a month. We have a mix of misdemeanor, minor felony and major felony-qualified attorneys, and the experience level ranges from 2020 bar numbers to attorneys who have been at our office for 43 years. Attorneys in our office are the first person a client sees in the jail, and they are responsible for the case from the day the Court appoints us to whenever the case is finally resolved, including referring cases for appeal and fixing sentencing issues. Attorneys are tireless advocates in and out of the courtroom, with strong client skills, professional in their dealings with everyone in the criminal justice system, and able to interact successfully in an office with 23 other lawyers and 22 support staff.

Public Defender Services of Lane County is a private non-profit organization committed to defending the rights of people who are facing a loss of their personal liberty due to the actions of the state. We represent adults and juveniles charged with everything from trespass to murder. We fight for the rights of people who are accused of violating their probation, and for those who are facing jail because they are behind on their child support payments. We fight for the rights of parents and children when the State becomes involved in termination proceedings, and we fight for the rights of those afflicted with mental illness when the state tries to hold them in the state hospital against their will.

The office has a rich history of defense advocacy, and has been a non-profit public defender since 1977. You’ll have the benefit of mentorship from attorneys with decades of experience, as well as new perspectives from newer members of our team. Our office qualifies for public interest loan forgiveness, subject to the whims of the federal government.   1. Embrace and embolden PDSLC’s mission statement and goals of client-centered advocacy and commitment to excellence.
  2. Design, implement, and improve training programs for attorneys, and work in tandem with support staff supervisors to develop training for professional support staff.
  3. Develop and maintain a curriculum in partnership with the University of Oregon School of Law for our clinical criminal defense program.
  4. Supervise law students through case evaluation, client meetings, court hearings and trials.
  5. Manage office training resources including a shared motion bank.
  6. Present and organize lectures, facilitate large and small group discussions, provide coaching and feedback at skills exercises and mock hearings.
  7. Coordinate with the Lane County Criminal Defense bar for sharing motions, legal strategies and tactics, and group training opportunities through Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
  8. Coordinate with other members of PDSLC’s leadership team and provide feedback for personnel evaluations.
  9. Supervise a small group of attorneys, probably newer hires.
  10. Research, prepare, and publish training materials, legal outlines, practice guides and advisories.
  11. Prepare an annual training plan. Collaborate with others locally, statewide, and nationally to plan and implement innovative training programs.
  12. Provide vigorous direct representation with energy and enthusiasm to our clients in a limited number of cases; a greater number of cases will be second chair or supervisory roles. Caseload will be weighted based on multiple factors, including the number of law students enrolled in clinical program, the number of direct attorney reports, and the frequency and duration of training programs.
  1. A demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, racial equity and social justice issues and a substantive understanding of the issues impacting our clients.
  2. In-depth understanding of all phases of the legal system with experience representing clients in all aspects of criminal cases.
  3. Substantial experience as a trainer and skills in supervision and performance coaching.
  4. Knowledge of training evaluation and needs assessments.
  5. Ability to develop curricula and training materials and present information to audiences in a clear and engaging manner.
  6. Ability to facilitate small group discussion and coach skills exercises to maximize learning for participants.
  7. Ability to organize event logistics and work concurrently on multiple short term and long-range projects.
  8. A track record of strategically guiding cases, projects and relationships; applying good and practiced judgment; and routinely pushing through roadblocks to achieve goals.
  9. Management skills and a coaching mindset. If you haven’t read “Managing to Change the World,” please do so prior to your interview.
  10. Ability to quickly build relationships across varying identities, income levels, races and ethnicities.
  11. A high level of organizational and administrative skills.
  12. Clear and effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
