Virginia Return to Freedom Project Resource Counsel

Candidate will need to start as soon as possible. Candidates are not expected to work in NACDL’s DC Office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to volunteer questions on pardons and related relief opportunities under Virginia law.
  • Collect and prepare resource materials for the Project’s online reference library.
  • Craft and advise on communication to volunteer regarding policy, resource, and legal updates.
  • Develop and execute webinars relating to the project.
  • Advise on applicant intake procedures.
  • Work with partner organizations to best utilize subject matter experts.
  • Participate in partner meetings

Requirements
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in Virginia and a member of the Bar in good standing.
  • At least 2 years of experience in criminal defense in Virginia.
  • Familiarity with Virginia criminal law and procedure.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong research, writing, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to engage in complex legal analysis and fact-finding
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and rapid-response demands
  • Demonstrated commitment to criminal justice reform.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with benefits. It is a nine-month position with the possibility of being permanent. Salary $6,250 per month.
