D.C. Compassionate Release Project Resource Counsel
The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is seeking a Resource Counsel will provide support for NACDL’s historic D.C. Compassionate Release Project. Utilizing DC Code 24-403.04, this Project focuses on securing release for incarcerated individuals convicted of violating Washington DC criminal laws who are at-risk for COVID-19. This position will be the first line legal resource for the Project’s pro bono volunteers.
The nature of the Project means that time is of the essence.  Candidate will need to start as soon as possible.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to volunteer questions on Compassionate Release under D.C. law
  • Collect and prepare resource materials for the online reference library
  • Craft and advise on communication to volunteer regarding policy, resource, and legal updates
  • Develop and execute webinars relating to the project.
  • Advise on applicant intake procedures
  • Work with partner organizations to best utilize subject matter experts
  • Distribute questions to subject area experts
  • Participate in partner meetings

Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • A J.D. degree and a minimum of 4 years of litigation experience, including experience defending criminal cases or relevant civil rights cases
  • Admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and a member of the bar in good standing
  • 2 years of experience in criminal practice in the District of Columbia
  • Experience with Compassionate Release preferred
  • Excellent research, writing, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to engage in complex legal analysis and fact-finding
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and rapid-response demands

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with benefits. It is a nine-month position with the possibility of being permanent. Salary $6,250 per month.
