Assistant Public Defender
The Monroe County Public Defender’s office, is an award-winning public defender’s office located in Rochester, NY. We provide client centered legal representation to indigent persons entitled to public defense. Employees are assigned to three areas of defense: family, appellate and criminal court.
Description of Duties
Duties involve investigating and preparing court cases, preparing appeals for defendants for whom appeals seem advisable, interviewing clients and related persons, coordinating work with support staff and fellow attorneys, filing motions, and other related documents on a timely basis, conducting legal research, providing effective oral advocacy in hearings, trials, and all court appearances . The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Special Assistant Public Defender or other higher level staff member. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class. Does related work as required.

Requirements Characteristics of the Idea Candidate
1. The Public Defender Assistant shall be an attorney duly licensed to practice law in the State of New York and admitted to practice in all courts within the scope of the plan.
2. The Public Defender Assistant must have the ability to build relationships with clients and possess clear and effective communication skills.
3. The Public defender Assistant Grade show a commitment to clients and exceptional advocacy.
4. The Public Defender Assistant Grade have an ability to work with the judges, lawyers, court administrators, other persons within the court system, and court officials.
5. The Public Defender Assistant Grade must have experience working with low income individuals or communities of color and a commitment to racial equity, diversity and inclusion.
