Capital Post-Conviction Mitigation Specialist Position
The Mississippi Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel (CPCC) is accepting applications for the position of mitigation specialist. CPCC is a state agency that represents people who have been sentenced to death in Mississippi in their state post-conviction proceedings. CPCC is dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, effective legal advocacy.

Position Description
The mitigation specialist works closely with each client as part of a team of attorneys, fact investigators, paralegals, and experts. Duties of the mitigation specialist at CPCC are consistent with those defined in the ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases and the Supplementary Guidelines for the Mitigation Function of Defense Teams in Death Penalty Cases.

Frequent travel is required. The position is at-will. The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to the defense of indigent prisoners in a section of the United States ripe for social and criminal justice reform. The challenges of working for justice in Mississippi and its surrounding states are many, as are the rewards. The cost of living here is very reasonable, and the state is rich with authentic music, art, and food. The climate is temperate, and the air is charged with Mississippi’s complex history and genuine hospitality.

Requirements Experience and Qualifications
  • B.S.W. or equivalent degree in related field and three years’ experience as a mitigation specialist or in a similar position with a similar skill set; or M.S.W. or equivalent degree in related field and two years’ experience as a mitigation specialist or in a similar position with a similar skill set
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Ability to work in a client-centered practice with a defense team that includes professionals in various fields
  • Experience with Internet research and strong computer skills with programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Valid driver’s license
Salary
Salary is based on experience. CPCC offers full Mississippi state employee benefits, including health insurance.
