Director of Training
OSPD is seeking client-centered applicants for the position of Director of Training. The Director is responsible for providing training and technical assistance to all public defenders, juvenile defenders, parent defenders, investigators, social workers, mitigation specialists, support staff and all other persons working in indigent defense in Mississippi. OSPD is located in Jackson. Training is conducted statewide. Some travel is required. The position is full time. Applicants must have five years of experience in indigent defense or a related field and possess a juris doctorate. Experience as a trainer with knowledge of training principles and practices for adult learners is preferred.

  • Assess need, design, plan, execute, and evaluate training for all Mississippi state indigent defense providers and staff.
  • In addition to instilling client-centered values, the Director of Training shall emphasize and regularly provide training on racial equity and the discriminatory treatment of marginalized people and communities. 
  • Provide both live in-person and distance learning opportunities. Negotiate and execute contracts as needed to deliver training to statewide participants.
  • Manage, direct, and work collaboratively with the Assistant to the Director of Training and three part-time resource counsel attorneys.
  • Work collaboratively with the Mississippi Public Defenders Association to provide training, maintain and monitor listservs and strive to develop a client-centered public defender community. 
  • Assist and support the State Defender in developing plans, communicating with stakeholders, and advocating for a client-centered statewide public defender system.
  • Serve on statewide committees/task forces/working groups as needed.
  • Develop new and maintain existing relationships with national and in-state indigent defense organizations and organizations that support our work.
  • Regularly attend national training events and incorporate what is learned in developing new training for Mississippi defenders.
  • Provide technical assistance to indigent defense providers on every aspect of defending indigent people charged with crimes.
  • Research, prepare, and publish training materials, legal outlines, practice guides and advisories.
  • Incorporate, collect, and analyze data in furtherance of all other duties and responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
